WHAT IS PHONE PHREAKING?

Phone phreaking was a subculture of people who explored and exploited the telephone network, beginning in the 1960s and reaching its peak in the 1970s and 1980s. Phreakers discovered that the phone system used in-band signaling tones to route calls, and that by reproducing these tones they could control the network.

The most famous tool was the "blue box," which generated a 2600Hz tone to seize trunk lines, followed by MF (multi-frequency) tones to route calls anywhere in the world for free. Notable phreakers included John Draper (Captain Crunch), who discovered that a toy whistle from a cereal box produced the exact 2600Hz tone needed.

Phone phreaking is considered a precursor to modern computer hacking. Many early computer hackers, including Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs, started as phone phreakers. PHREAKING lets you experience this fascinating era of technological exploration through an interactive story.
